Hi Alta Vista Residents,

I hope everyone had a great Canada Day long weekend! 🍁

Lots of great events are coming up in July:

Saturday July 6th at dusk on the Jim Tubman Rink at 2185 Arch Street, the Canterbury Community Association will be presenting a free Movie in the Park, Kung Fu Panda 4. Free snacks will be provided at the Sequoia Fun Cruiser starting at 7p.m. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets.

Saturday July 13th 9-3 at 877A Boyd Avenue, near Carling and Maitland, the Ottawa Tool Library is hosting a Maker Market and Electronics Recycling, to commemorate ten years in the community. The OTL champions the circular economy through tool lending, sales, workshops and Repair Cafés. Come and drop old electronics and batteries for recycling, browse the Maker Market, sample wares from the food trucks and enter the OTL raffle.

Friday July 19th, 6-8:30, at Weston Park, Councillor Carr’s office will be hosting another Jazz in the Park night. Nicky T’s food truck will be on site for the purchase of dinner items. The jazz trio performance is 7-8 PM.

Monday July 22nd 6-8PM at the Impact Hub, 6th Floor, 123 Slater Street, Walkable Ottawa and Ecology Ottawa will present a workshop on 15-Minute Neighbourhoods in the context of the new Zoning By-Law. Lots of volunteer opportunities continue through the summer! Bring your favourite teenager and help them get started on their volunteer hours.

The AVCA Invasive Management and Land Restoration Committee will be working at several different sites to remove Dog Strangling Vine and Buckthorn from our green spaces. To join the email list, contact avcadsv.ca.

Reforestation The Greenspace Stewardship Committee is responsible for watering Butternut and Chestnut saplings in Grasshopper Hill Park. To help, email [email protected]

Shoreline Revitalization The Greenspace Stewardship Committee is cleaning and revitalizing the mouth of Sawmill Creek, removing garbage and invasive plants, and planting native flowers and shrubs. The work area runs from the Billings Estate down to the Rideau River, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 9:00-11:00. Wear long sleeves, long pants and gloves. Saturdays 9-1 the Alta Vista Market runs up until Thanksgiving, on the grounds of St Thomas the Apostle Church, 2345 Alta Vista Drive. The AVCA is on site weekly, to showcase our involvement in the community, help with the Food Bank Garden, and host a variety of non-profits and children’s activities each week. We can always use volunteers from the AVCA to help host! For more information, respond to this email.

AVCA Meetings: Fall meetings will take place on the third Tuesday of the month at 7PM at Rideau Park United, 2203 Alta Vista Drive, September 17th, October 15th Annual General Meeting, and November 19th. The Alta Vista Community Association Board of Directors and Members hope to see you then.
